WHAT IS AN MRI?

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is a non-invasive imaging technology that uses a magnetic field and computed-generated radio waves to create cross-sectional images of the soft tissue, bone, fat, muscles and internal organs of your body.
It uses powerful magnets that produces a strong magnetic field that forces the water molecules in your body to align to with the magnetic field. These molecules are manipulated by a painless radiofrequency wave which enter the body. Once this wave is turned off, the molecules release energy and this is detected by the MRI sensors which translates this into an image.
MRI Imaging does not use ionising radiation.

OUR MRI MACHINE

Medscan Merrylands has the widest open bore system machine available on the market, this provides the highest level of patient comfort especially those with claustrophobia.

Our State of the Art 1.5 Tesla MRI scanner is capable to imaging the body faster with higher resolution images.

Typical scanning times of examinations of the brain, spine and knees are on average 10 minutes in length. That is equivalent to three songs on the radio! That’s faster scan times without compromising high image quality for all MSK, neuro-imaging and body imaging.

We are a specialised Cardiac MRI site, with our newest software update we can perform significantly faster cardiac MRI examinations with better image quality. We can also scan patients with difficulty holding their breath and patients with arrhythmia and pacemaker or defibrillator.

Some examinations require an injection of a special contrast which helps to highlight the blood vessels and additional information to the scan.

PREPARATION

There is no preparation required for an MRI scan. However, if you do have a pacemaker, defibrillator, cerebral aneurysm clips or a surgically implanted medical device like a cochlear implant, please inform the receptionist for further instructions as some implanted devices are not MRI safe.

PROCEDURE

Before your MRI exam, you will be asked to fill out an MRI screening form which will ask if some questions including if you have a pacemaker/defibrillator, any implants and allergies. Our MRI radiographer will review this form with you before you enter the MRI room for your scan to ensure you do not have any implants that are contraindicated.

You will need to remove any metal objects before the scan and may be asked to change into a gown. All your personal items will be placed in a secure area while you have your scan.

Once inside the MRI room, you may be asked to lie in a certain position on a table with a coil (special MRI equipment used to capture the signal for the scan), adequate padding will be provided to ensure you are as comfortable as possible. The table will move you into position within the MRI scanner.

The MRI makes loud vibrating and knocking sounds and may cause a twitching sensation from the rapidly switching fields in the MRI. Noise cancelling headphone are provided for you to use, with a choice of music to listen to.

Throughout the procedure you will be able to hear and communicate with the MRI radiographer who will be conducting your scan. A safety buzzer will be given to you, squeeze it and this will let the MRI radiographer know you need their assistance.

Some patients undergoing an MRI scan may require an injection of an intravenous (IV) dye (contrast) known as Gadolinium. This makes certain tissues and blood vessels show up more clearly and in greater detail. If contrast is required, this will be discussed with you by our MRI radiographer on the day of your appointment.

RESULTS

After your examination, the images from your study will be available on the Medscan Z-tech app. A report written by our radiologists, along with the images will be sent directly to your referring doctor. Medscan will store digital copies of all studies on our secure database for comparison with any future examinations.  All images are available online with the Medscan Z-link app()
